In 2008, TransCape initiated a scholarship program which offers dedicated and top performing students an opportunity to a better education at a more advanced school in Mthatha.
Schools in rural areas in the Eastern Cape have an average pass rate of below 30%. Public schools lack sufficient resources, and teachers are unmotivated. Sometimes, students have to walk up to 16 km a day to school.
The traditional lifestyle of people living in rural areas negatively influences school attendance, as children have to participate in many livelihood chores. No lighting and private space at home also makes it very difficult for students to study.
Most of these problems are solved by offering promising students an opportunity to attend a school in Mthatha. Investing in talented youths doesn’t just change the lives of the scholarship students and their families-- it also provides role models to younger students, as well as cultivating leaders for communities.
